🐑Penning Design - Laying Bricks🐑

The simplest way to design pens and add flexibility into a Shearing Shed is to treat the fences like you are laying bricks and overlay and offset the pens and gateways - just like laying bricks.
It is all about moving the sheep closer to the catching pens side on, so the sheep are always drawing beside and away from catching pen fill and board until they are needed to fill.

The cool design stuff,

»Sheep love curves , you are letting the them do that
»Creates a serpentine draw
»It allows for sheep to overlap or pass others encouraging draw from other sheep
»Superior flexibility for water breaks
»Elongated pen dimensions encourage sheep to run away or fill pen as they escape, rather than a larger pen with less obvious escape - its called PASSIVE GUIDANCE
❗NOTE Diamond yards do not work as well in shearing sheds as the gateway width reduction and poor angle created limits draw - still works but not as good due the mob ringing to find the escape.

💭Sheep love to escape and remob - remob and escape that is all you are doing and getting closer to the board as you go.

*Replaced existing gates with slide swing gates
*Replaced wall of grinding room

Back in July some of the Flinn Design team took to the road (and the air) to the 2026 GroWQ Innovation Expo & Future Producers Forum held in Longreach QLD.
Combined the boys did approx 9,000ks between the 2 vehicles. Whilst Genna got to enjoy coming in via plane! Western NSW & QLD sure are stunning.
GrowQ offered up some very inspiring and innovative insights to western QLD farming with 33 speakers and over 40 trade displays.
Flinn Design got to be one of the live demos with the shearing trailer - Thanks Dave for steeping up to shear a couple!!
Thanks to Prue and the team of organisers, it was awesome to be a part of it all!!
